3 things we're doing differently in 2018

If 2017 left us anything good, it would be all the lessons it has taught us, and now that we’re new and fresh in 2018, it seems like the best time to put those lessons in use.

Here’s what we’re doing differently in 2018.

We’re caring about our mental health and overall wellbeing.

That starts with understanding what taking care of your mental health means. Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which a person realizes their capabilities and how they handle the normal stresses of life.

“Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.” – Mental Health Gov.

Our state of mental health determines our capabilities. For example, one day, my mental health might be the best it’s been and so my capabilities might be less than someone who’s mental health is really good that day.

Our state of mental health does not determine our capabilities as a person, nor does it determine our worth.

Ways to take care of your mental health include:

Eating Right

A large amount of evidence now exists that suggests that diet is as important to mental health as it is to our physical health. Which makes sense in its own right; if we’re eating junk most of the time, our bodies start to grow sluggish and slow, and it doesn’t sound too far off that our brain and our mental health will as well.

The better we eat, the better we feel, the better we think, and the better we are able to perform. This includes adding more vegetables to your diet, especially cruciferous vegetables and leafy greens; fruits, especially berries and citrus fruits for their stress reducing antioxidants; as well as nuts and seeds.

This is also includes reducing the amount of packaged and store bought food you consume, because of the GMOs and chemicals that can be found.

 Learning to take some time off

Part of taking care your mental health is being able to realize when it’s time to take a step back. It’s easy to pile things onto our plate, and to say yes, but we need to understand that we can’t do it all, no matter how much we want to. We’re only human and we need to rest.

Try taking a day, or a few hours to yourself every week, some time for reflection and relaxation, where you can take a break from life’s stresses. Having a consistent set time for yourself helps reduce your overall stress, and in turn is good for your mental health.

Loving our self

We’re going to love and appreciate ourselves more. Celebrating and appreciating yourself, and the effort you’ve put into your family, work, school, and/or yourself is an important thing we should all be doing. However, most of us don’t because it’s usually frowned upon, and seen as vain.

We’re saying no thank you to that.

Not only do you deserve to appreciate and celebrate yourself, it’s also good for your mental health to love and think positively of your self.

Love yourself, girl. 

We’re grabbing all the opportunities that come our way

We’re putting ourselves out there, and letting the world see what we have to offer. We’re going to let ourselves be open to new opportunities and experiences, because we are literally the only thing standing in our way of success and opportunity.

You can do this by:

Putting yourself and your work out there

As daunting as it may sound, you have to let yourself be a little vulnerable to the world. That could mean posting your work, applying for a new job, or even just signing up for a class you're interested in.

Put yourself out there and let the universe know what you’re offering.

Putting yourself out of your comfort zone

Putting yourself out of your comfort zone is going to be the best and worst thing you’ll ever do. It will suck at first, trust me, but it gets better. No one achieved anything by staying in his or her bubble of comfort.

Throwing yourself into things that might not be directly related

Are you into science? Take an art class. Are you into fashion? Take a kickboxing class. You don’t always have to do things that are directly related to your goal. Inspiration is everywhere, and it strikes when and wherever it wants to.

Also, love yourself. It’s your most important opportunity; take it.

We’re Being Supportive AF

We’re going to support people who are more successful than us, people who aren’t, and anybody/everybody in between. It’s 2018, and we know that someone else’s success does not determine or deter our own.

You can do this by:

Understanding that your success is written for you.

Someone else’s success isn’t going to change anything about yours. So support everyone, it can’t hurt you at all.

Not letting other people determine you’re worth. 

Don’t let anyone make you doubt your own capabilities.

Lastly, love yourself. It’s super important.
